About the Author
Barry Gross, an expert woodworker and artisan with more than 30 years of experience, specializes in transforming wood and other media such as Corian—the kitchen countertop material—into amazing pieces of art and useful every-day items. A skilled teacher who knows how to start at the beginning, Barry volunteers solutions to his own mistakes with the hope of encouraging beginners to redesign rather than recycle. Barry is a member of the American Association of Woodturners, the Bucks County Woodturning Association, and the Scroll Saw Association of the World. Barry was recently invited to join the prestigious Pen Makers' Guild and is named in Who's Who in 2005. His art can be seen in various art galleries including Island Earth Gallery, Langman Galleries, and Wylands Sae Life Gallery in New York. In addition, he has received commissions from DuPont and for the Alien Stinger display at the New York Aquarium. His exquisite turned pens are sought after for gifting, most notably, his Stars and Stripes pen was recently gifted to House Speaker Dennis Hastert. Barry Gross is the author of Pen Turner's Workbook, Learn to Turn, and a frequent contributor to Scroll Saw Workshop magazine and Woodturning Design magazine. He lives in Bensalem, Pennsylvania.

The photography is excellent. The coverage of the subject matter is complete. That being said, most of the content in the book is redundant merely re-describing the process of turning and assembling pens. The hook for me was the cover. The beautiful pens displayed on the cover are great examples of what custom turned pens could be. I was expecting a great deal more on the processes for making these artistic things of beauty. There was proportionately very little in the way of describing processes in making the humble pen a thing of beauty. If you've never turned and assembled a pen this book would be OK. If you've made a few pens, you will not find this book to be of much value.
The book contains all the information you need to make pens. However, being new to using a lathe and having never bought a pen kit before, was more than a little confused getting started. I didn't think it was made clear enough about the different sizes of drill bits you will probably need or how to begin using your lathe to make pens. After re-reading the book and learning what I was looking for, all the information is in there, it just isn't organized in the way a real novice might look for it.
This is a great book for beginning wood turners. Having just got into the hobby I don't have a lot of time at the lathe but when i do its good to have an idea of what is possible with pen turning. Its a hand reference for ideas and gives you something to strive towards. Would recommend for a beginner!
This book has so much great information and it sparks so many new ideas for pens. I met the author of this book at the woodworking show in Atlanta earlier this year in 2013 and Barry Gross is a very knowledgeable man in the art of turning pens. Barry was so willing to answer any and all questions that I had. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is interested in turning pens. Thanks Barry!
