The book ws slow and not written on an adult level. Despite that I read on until several errors forced me to stop reading. Error one, two of the characters go to a kosher restaurant in Warsaw and order chicken and potato pancakes with apple sauce and sour cream - no way a kosher restaurant would serve meat and dairy together, Error two, a main character was out walking with her baby in Warsaw and was surprised to see German soldiers marching into the city. Warsaw was bombed from the beginning of the war starting on September 1 and continued for over a month. One of the largest raids occurred on September 25, By September 27 10% of the city was completely destroyed while 40% was severely damaged and over 20,000 people were killed yet she was surprised to see the Germans. Final error, for me, was explaining, in parenthesis, that the Judenrat means Jewish rat. Ratte in German is rat. Rat in German means council. Judenrat is the Jewish council. I could not go on after this.Even a novel needs to get actual events correct.
I really wanted to like this book. I thought "All my Love, Detrick" was a good story and was looking forward to reading more about Helga and the baby she gave up. The story line in “You are my Sunshine†is, at best, mediocre and the ending seems as if the author simply got to a point and wanted to say, “The End.â€When I read some of the other reviews for this book, I found there is a very common recurring theme: the grammar errors make this book difficult to read. In addition to the grammatical errors, there are so many mechanical errors it is simply annoying. The function key F7 would not have eliminated all the errors, but it certainly would have cut the number of grammar errors and incomplete sentences by at least half and likely would have identified many of the mechanical errors as well. I am not convinced it was used even once. For example, The Great Warm is correctly spelled, but the wrong word has been used. World War I is never referred to as the Great Warm, but it is frequently called the Great War.I was surprised to read a response from Roberta Kagan to one review. She said she did not have the money to hire an editor; it shows. If you want to make a career as a writer of historical fiction, not only do you need to do proper research into the time and events of the story, but you also must find an editor or editors who will help make sure there are few to no grammatical errors.I am willing to give some of the historical inaccuracies a pass. This book is after all historical FICTION. However, because the atrocities of World War II are so well documented, the inaccuracies make it seem as if Roberta Kagan did little to no history research to write this novel.
Weak knowledge of German society in terms of customs and traditions. Wrong translation of German words (Judenrat is translated as Jewish rat, but it must be Jewish Council), bad spelling of German words ( for example: Yavol = Jawohl). The description of the Holocaust though is certainly correct in all its cruelty. To sum up: the story is carelessly written and not trustworthy.
I was hoping for something a little less sexually graphic. Totally made me hate the book and not willing to read on.
Well, that was awful. However, since I DNFed at 21%, perhaps I shouldn't judge. Still, if the book continues with its horrid writing, lack of editing, dry cutout characters, historical inaccuracies, jumpy timeline, lack of a central character, boring style, and failure to live up to the blurb's stated plot, it would've gotten a 1-star rating if I finished.If you want to know how the book is written, look no further than the blurb. The novel is written in that exact same style - nothing shown, everything told. It doesn't just need a good editor; it needs a complete rewrite.I stopped when a "sweet old lesbian couple" popped up. Um, okay? Living publicly in Hitler's Germany? I don't believe it. Furthermore, it's not something I personally support, so it wouldn't do to keep reading.Overall, I can't recommend it to my Christian friends, nor can I honestly recommend it to secular audiences as the writing and historical problems are just too bad.
The plot was intriguing and I quickly scanned the book to reach the end, but the numerous (at least in the hundreds) misspellings, comma splices, incomplete sentences etc etc were a terrible distraction. I also found some elements of the plot a little contrived. The author may have been inspired by Sophie's Choice when Zofia became a maid for Manfred's household at Auschwitz and took up residence in the basement. I also found Manfred's quick rise a little unbelievable, although from other reading, I know that there were many young people who rose quickly in the SS. As well, I didn't like the ending where the author left us hanging - waiting for the next book to come out. That being said, from reading other books about the Holocaust, I found the descriptions of the horrors of Auschwitz and the Nazi atrocities in general to be accurate.
Very graphic depicting abuse. Not needed for a good book. Also, just another book about the Holocaust which seems to be common today. I have read many excellent books on that subject and this is not one of them!!
This is the second book I've read by Roberta Kagan (1st was "All My Love, Detrick"), which completely captured my attention, with very realistic characters and a storyline evoking strong emotions on almost every level. This book was no less riveting and I cannot WAIT until "The Promised Land" is published! On the other hand, I must explain the reason for not giving this book a full 5 stars...the grammar and spelling were just atrocious! I found myself being constantly distracted from the storyline due to the number of spelling errors, commas in the wrong place (causing awkward pauses), or missing entirely, as well as apostrophes used incorrectly. Normally, I can overlook this aspect, if it is an occasional occurrence, but it was quite frustrating. I hope the next edition will be edited more carefully, as this seems to be (in my humble opinion) the only aspect preventing this author from becoming a best-seller. Review by Terry Dover
