#1,459 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I really, really wasn’t going to read this book this weekend. I had too many things to get done. Then I decided I would read just one chapter while doing my laundry. Three hours later, I was curled up in my favorite chair, engrossed in the doings of the London League, my laundry totally forgotten. (It did get done...eventually.) Such is the power of a Rebecca Connolly novel. The characters are written so vividly that you feel like you could look up from the page and see them in front of you. I love the depth of feeling that gradually develops between Malcolm and Beth, the love that develops between Malcolm’s children and Beth, and the camaraderie between the members of the League. Another wonderful book!

I have absolutely LOVED every book in this series, the writing, the language, the plotting, world building & general storycraft has been satisfyingly excellent.Until “A Tip of the Cap”.I don’t understand why. It’s almost as though an entirely different author wrote it.The writing is rough, & I frequently wondered if the editing process was greatly truncated or skipped all together. I’m not just referring to the missed, “he was London” or doubled transition words sprinkled throughout, either, but glaring usage issues that were like a scratched record in the lovely movie trying to play out in my mind. I mean, check this out? “...all of whom were rapt with attention”— ‘gazing on in rapt attention”, perhaps. But not “rapt with attention“ (rapt: from the same root as the “rapture,” or, to be carried away by a transcendently spiritual experience). To be carried away with attention? She was describing the listeners, not the one they were paying attention to, if you wanted to wrestle over it😼Such misuse pulls me right out, & makes me sad.Or goodness, the first paragraph of the Epilogue, where we go from focus on Lord & Lady Montgomery for the entire novel, to, “Nobody really cared about the Grangers all that much, and they never had, but ever since they had let it be known that they were anticipating the birth of a child, they were all anybody could talk about.” Whiplash! And “they” who? Nobody? The Grangers? The general populace? Oh— ALL OF THE ABOVE, & all in one sentence. I had to read that sentence more than a few times to understand it.And the word, “somehow.” Used 50 times. It was like a drinking game.-“...somehow smiling in his tone but not with his mouth.”-“He somehow pulled her even closer”-“...somehow, she found a way to try to do both at the same time,”-“somehow breathing without coughing,”-“was perfect for a man who wished to keep his distance. But somehow, it wasn’t.”-“somehow having entered without him knowing.”-“he was somehow unfit for the covert world.”-“If she had somehow broken out of that shell”-“Her lips, somehow fuller than he recalled”-“but somehow lost none of the passion”I could go on for a very long time. I found myself wishing she would simply cut out the word “somehow;” virtually all of the sentences would still manage to make sense that way & my eye could stop twitching. It was just an editing thing that started to grate, but also began to make me feel irritated with any similar words after a while. “Someone,” for example (31 times). And then I began to be super sensitive to ANY awkward phrasing, “as best as” being a phrase that comes readily to mind.Even then, just editing nit picks wouldn’t have been so weird, especially as I’ve noticed this sort of inconsistency from this author before: immaculate beauty in one novel, a hot mess in another. But the pacing was also messy, I felt a good fourth of the book was just situational vamping that did not progress the story or add depth & could have easily been entire lopped off without injuring the story. Of course, distilling the angst would have been best, but give the choice between violent editing & keeping the fluff, I’d have chosen violence.I loved the concept. I loved the beauty of the MC Beth’s nature & the realism in her, “aha!” moments with Lilly.Malcom was a little left field for me. I need to re-read the other novels because I don’t remember him as being such an irrefutable hottie, etc, though the strong silent stuff was spot on.I’m just super bummed that it wasn’t more polished.Ms. Connolly’s work, when given a proper shine, is absolutely brilliant. I’m just sad that wasn’t the case here.If kindle Unlimited: I recommend, there’s a lot of garbage out there & at least this has quality if not finesse. If you have to pay for it: I’d probably have read it anyway for the series’ sake, but it’s by no means my fave.

Wow- the author once again outdid herself with this newest addition to the London League series. Seriously, I finished this book in one day, and I still want to re-read favorite parts.Beth and Malcom or “Cap” as he is known in the first two books, have such a unique story. They marry based solely on the fact that Malcom needs someone to care for his mother-less children, and Beth chooses this life over that of a governess. Beth was an absolute favorite from the start. She is spunky, kind, fantastic with children, and has courage in spades. She is exactly what Cap and his kids needs, although he doesn’t know it and doesn’t want to acknowledge it.Malcom was a great swoon-worthy hero, but not in the traditional sense. Watching him mourn his first love and late wife, agonize over developing feelings for Beth, worry over his agents in the London League, and learn to truly love and play with his children again was fascinating. He is so likable because he is so real, faults and all. The way he takes care of Beth had me melting into a puddle, especially after a certain turning point in the story.I did feel that this book focused much more on Malcom and his family rather than the intrigue and suspense of the London League, but it was still woven into the background of this story. This was truly a delightful read, and of course now I simply CANNOT wait for the next book in the series!

Cap's story was unlike the others in this series - a widower still mourning his wife while trying to be a father and to perform his dangerous job effectively. Beth had amazing resilience and strength with the "burden" of taking care of Cap's children and estate in the face of his struggle with guilt and lack of affection. The themes explored are relevant to any age - how does one move on from the death of a loved spouse and learn to love again without guilt; how does one take care of those left behind while grieving the one who left? The evolution of Cap's feelings for Beth and his touching confession are so beautifully written, it's a bookmarked page and left me wanting more of the story. Well done, Rebecca! You remain one of my top three autobuy authors. My story tags: Complex, Clean, Sweet, Touching, Suspenseful.
