Either this new hard cover book is cheap counterfeit or they had a bad day at a ligitimate printing press. The book has the first page at the end and the last page at the beginning. The pages are not bound. I picked it up and all the pages fell out. The pages themselves are clear. :(

I heard of this book through On Point (Ashbrook had an interview with Wohlleben) and was immediately fascinated by the information and knowledge Wohlleben has on trees. I bought the audiobook and enjoyed it so much, I decided to buy copies of this book to friends and family. I saw this book recently came out as an illustrated edition, and decided to get a copy to see if it was worth the extra $. TOTALLY WORTH IT. The information is in there, but so are absolutely stunning pictures. Many 'coffee table books' like this one do not make it engaging to read, however, this book was formatted in a way that makes it very easy (not overwhelming) to open a random page, start reading a few words, and immediately get absorbed into it, all the while not feeling compelled to have to read it all in one sitting (easy to open a random page, read a chapter, a page or a few paragraphs, take in new fascinating information, and come back to it another day). Fantastic Coffee table book, also easily accessible to younger generations. Could not recommend it enough! One of the best (gift) purchase of the year!!!

The book itself is beautiful. The pictures and text are outstanding. My one star rating is because the text is heavily abridged from the author's 2016 book and this really isn't made all that clear from the description. How much is left out? I don't know, but the original book has 288 pages and this one only 176. And given that half the pages are full page photographs, my guess is that only 25% of the book is included.

The author takes us on both a scientific and imaginative tour of trees. I read the illustrated version, which is abridged over the original edition. The author tries to think of trees in an anthropomorphic and social way, as well as placing them in a scientific context. He gives an ecological picture of trees, with some discussion of human relationships to trees in using them, not only for forestry and timber, but also for beautifying cities. He looks at this world of trees from multiple perspectives, from the viewpoint of the small communities of plants and animals encountered in forested areas, to the large scale impact of trees on weather and climate. He also tries to give a view of the potentially long lives of trees, and the significance of this. I think his book is generally a worthwhile book to read, even for biologists, as he has a unique and interesting perspective that he brings. The book can be recommended especially to those who want a better appreciation of the place of trees and forest in nature.

After reading the original through my library app, I really wanted a physical copy to keep and share. I was excited when I saw this *new* *illustrated* version, and didn't think to check to compare text length. The original is 288 pages and 36 chapters. It's incredible and I strongly recommend it. This is pretty and features text highlights, but it's still not as good as the incredible tree story Wohlleben describes in greater detail in the longer version. It's still beautiful and I'm going to keep it as a conversation starter. My small children at least will appreciate the photographs.

It is not made clear that this version is abridged. The phrase "compelling selections from the original book" is used, and that did not grab my attention the way "abridged" would have. My mother first read a borrowed copy, and she tells me that information she enjoyed reading in it has been left out.

Incredibly beautiful. If you love trees/nature you must have this. It brings peace page by page.

This is a beautiful illustrated version of the original book that attempts to inform the reader of the amazing complexities of the forest environment. Anyone who loves trees, and particularly anyone who lives among ancient giants, should familiarize themself with the interconnectedness of their mysteries.
