This book is visually arresting, if you are a fan of Darrows work on Frank Miller's Hard Boiled, then you will understand and love Shemp Buffet. It's an overload, its taking an idea and going totally all the way with it, I love that about Darrow. He takes something and milks it for all its worth, if he's going to do a story where the Shaolin Cowboy is gonna fight zombies, then he's going to kill zombies every single way imaginable. And he does! It's entertaining if you love art and over the topness, just don't expect an in depth thing, this is style, style and more style all the way! Extremely pleased with this, Darrow is a master. My hats down to you sir!
So I was not sure where to start with Shaolin Cowboy so this was the first book I bought which was a bit of a mistake.It's basically the hallway fight scene in Old Boy spread out across 130+ pages. That being said I enjoined it, the art was awesome. I found myself adding in sound effects in my head and instead of going panel to panel I would just open up the next page and glance at random panels, giving me the effect you see in movies where the frames cut to random hitting, cutting, bashing, snapping. . . .It was fun but I could have used a bit of story line with it. Again the art is something to behold and it's fun to have something different but I wish I had done a little more research into the series to find out where to start.P.S shriveled zombie dicks, shriveled zombie dicks everywhere.
First, the book. It is a wonderful oversized cloth bound hardcover to showcase Geoff Darrow's beautiful line art and Dave Stewart's masterful colors. Make no mistake this is one Shaolin Cowboy fight start to finish in painstaking detail. GORY UNRELENTING DARROWISH DETAIL. You dont miss one moment of the entire melee. If you want witty repartee, look elsewhere. This is fight night in the desert with an endless sea of zombies. An interesting experiment of the comic book form. I haven't read a book like this before and I look forward to Mr Darrow's next story.
I am a fan of Darrow's art, but felt a bit short-changed by the lack of story. (This book collects several single issues, but is one long fight-scene) The "story-so-far" section had that, but at the end of this book, I wondered if this was really the end, and the ending I got to was missing explanation or exposition. If I were buying this as a monthly comic, I doubt I would have read this to the end. My rating reflects my affection for G. Darrow's work, but there are better comics if you are looking for story.
If you just want some great zombie killing action just skip past the long text, and you’ll be treated to a smorgasbord of zombie slaying the likes you have yet seen, in any medium.
A bit disappointing. I like stripped down stories, but this is kinda ridiculous. Most of it is the same panel redrawn over and over and over. I'm not really sure what he was going for here.

Mr. Geof Darrow! Just read the revised hardcover last night. Not sure what the differences/additions were from the original 4-issue series, but holy smokes WOW! It did flow so much better. I began to realize the entire fight scene happened in a very quick, short time span. It was strike after strike that was happening in rapid succession and if it were real life probably only lasted 10-minutes tops. He took them out with such precision and speed. (In the individual, monthly issues you didn't get this sense of time.)And I noticed little things like the below images that gave clues to the deeper message/story happening here.I still don't know if the metaphors/symbols I interpreted were meant to be interpreted the way you did, but it was a highly satisfying story when taken in a material vs. spiritual context. Or even just looking at the overwhelming futility of life and how we fight against it only to meet our inevitable end.Great stuff! Thanks for making a story that made us actually think.
