A twenty-year Unix veteran, she currently works as a systems engineer for TeleCommunication Systems in Annapolis, Maryland, and teaches classes on Unix and Internet topics at Anne Arundel Community College. EVAN R. MARKS has more than fifteen years as a Unix system administrator in the financial and manufacturing industries. Currently, he is assistant vice president of enterprise engineering at MassMutual Financial Group and is responsible for the Unix engineering and image workflow teams.

It's a pretty good book over all. A lot of tips in there that will probably be extremely helpful to new administrators, regardless of the OS you are using. In our shop we only use Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris, so it didn't help much. I had thought I was getting a more recent edition, but didn't pay any attention to the publishing date, so thats on me.If you working on Solaris 8 or 9 servers, this book would probably provide a lot of insight, into how things work. If you are completely new to administration altogether, then you could potentially gain a lot of insight into how things are done, and how some things probably should be done more often.One of the things I particularly liked about the book, is the way that they stress (as all books of this type should) the importance of backups, and even help with a few tips on how to set up a backup schedule.If you are starting on Solaris 10, or OpenSolaris, and you have never done any admin work before, this book will probably confuse more than help. A lot of things changed between Solaris 9 and 10, that make it hard to follow at some points. I'm basing my opinion on the fact that I started on Solaris 10, and reading through the book see a lot of things that flat don't apply anymore. File system layouts are a great example. Since the introduction of ZFS, this arena is considerably different. If you are working on a Solaris 10 server that is still running on the UFS file system, and using SVM (Solaris Volume Manager) then the information will probably help.Pretty well written book, by people who seem to have spent time in the trenches and know how it happens in the "real world".
The title describes this book perfectly. It is another brief and to the point book that covers a lot of material. I hate it when authors / publishers try to publish phone books of endless bla bla to get it to sell, but this one is only around 500 pages. It goes over many of the basic but essential 'solutions' such as POP servers, SECURITY, backups and restores, DNS, permissions, etc. It's not the end all be all book for Solaris, but it's pretty good. I gave it 5 stars because of the content and the price.
I think the second edition of the book is fine, except for a couple of errors in the script examples. Although the errors seem trivial there should be an errata published on Wiley's website showing the corrections.
Good ideas but very dated. Checked the Wiley web site, this site, and everywhere I could to figure out which version of Solaris this book covers. Seems to be Solaris 7 or earlier.Would be nice to see an updated edition (Solaris 8/9) of this book. If it is updated, the synopsis should state which version(s) of Solaris the book references.
Understand Unix and want to dig deeper into Solaris Admin? Then this is the book for you. I love this book--it is my new bible and I study it every chance I get. Well written. I had been using Unix for a long time but was weak in Sys Admin. Partly because I didn't have a good reference. Without a knowledge of the boot process, diaganostic tools, I felt I had a major weakness in this area. I looked around for a book that would fill this need and was very happy to find this book. I especially liked the chapter on setting up an Internet site.I listed the index below, since it's one thing I like to read before purchasing a book. This book is amazing as its not a rehash of points you need to know about to pass the Solaris Certified Sys Admin exam. Instead this is a true to life list of common issues/solutions a REAL sys admin would face in day to day work. The basics of hardware is fantastic and I wish I had this info at the start of my career. Webflash/jumpstart.. fantastic and now part of my server environment. NIS ... fantastic...... DYnAMIC RECONFIGURATION! VOLUME MANAGEMENT!!! This is a True System Adminstrator's Book. Note this won't help you pass to SCSA as if you need to read up on the format of the /etc/passwd file then this book is not for you.If you are interviewing for a Solaris admin job... get this book!!! Forget any of the exam cram or study guides for the SCSA as its all BS.A+!!!!
The breadth and depth of knowledge in this book is amazing.I've been a unix admin for 12 years and bought the first editionquite some time ago. It still sits within reach and I oftencarry it back and forth to work as it's that useful. I highlyrecommend this book for those who like a practical hands-onapproach. If you are looking at if for one thing you'reinterested in (jumpstart for example), buy it. The othertopics in there are so well written that they will perk yourinterest. If you really want to get into the nuts and boltsof say, jumpstart, just download the free pdf's from sun'ssite (sun has several pdf's of 300-700 pages on jumpstart alone).
